Aralee Dorough is the principal flutist of the Houston Symphony and an active performing and recording artist. She is on the faculty of the Moores School of Music and the Texas Music Festival.
She has traveled around the world as a member of the Houston Symphony Chamber Players, performing in places like Tokyo, Osaka, Vienna, Copenhagen, Hanover and at the Ravinia Festival. Aralee recorded Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G major with Christoph Eschenbach and the Houston Symphony for a triple CD set released by IMP Records in 1994. She also made two recordings with Eschenbach and the Chamber Players for the Koch label, including a critically acclaimed rendition of Schoenberg’s Quintet for Winds. Her debut solo recording, “Colours” featuring music of Debussy, Bartok, Barber and Stravinsky, is due for release in October 2013.

Houston Symphony Principal Flutist Aralee Dorough has released her first solo CD … Colours is an exploration of the color palette of the flute as heard through flute and piano renditions of works usually heard in orchestral settings. The CD as a whole is truly lovely in the sound, phrasing, and general beauty of music presented. Though many people may encounter this set of recordings looking for standards such as “Poem” by Charles Griffes or “Ballade” by Frank Martin, the whole collection is fantastic. Every work has its place in the orchestral world, and the theme is further codified by era: The works are drawn from the early 20th century and represent an interesting mix of the impressionistic character of Debussy and Griffes in contrast with much more rhythmically driven works by Stravinsky and Bartok. Dorough uses her spinning sound intentionally and beautifully, using vibrato to propel the phrase rather than simply color the sound. Even though the music is all from a certain time period, the CD never seems pedantic. The variety of tone color is applied judiciously and effectively … The Martin, a likely draw for most flutists, is … very clear and beautifully played. Flutists will benefit from listening to Dorough’s color palette and will have the opportunity to enjoy listening to the lovely lyricism she offers through Colours.

Dorough rocked out her concerto [Mozart “Flute Concerto No. 2 in D Major”], opting for a stylistic approach rather than one focusing on pure technical proficiency. In the spirit of virtuosity, she did write her own cadenzas, all appropriate, beautiful and fitting. She has the kind of sound that shimmers with overtones and fills the hall, without sounding heavy and forced.
